Isn’t Making Money Online Supposed To Be Fun?

When I first learned about making money online I was certain that it was going to be just the most exciting and fun thing in the world. Or maybe I was just thinking about how fun it was going to be to spend all that ‘easy-money‘ I was going to make. Well, the reality has unfolded a little differently. Making money online certainly has it’s moments. I mean even the small ones. Like the fact that I’m sitting at home tonight with some great music playing, knowing I’m not going to be distracted by anything (wife and kids all tucked into bed) and now I’m just typing away my thoughts with my bare feet up on the desk. Now how could I ever hope to enjoy a similar arrangement in my office!

Let me back-track about an hour however. This was roughly the half way point of my work tonight. See, I work full-time in a job I enjoy and travel approximately 90 minutes each way to the office (I choose to live on the beach because I can afford it because of my online income and work income and  it’s bloody awesome to listen to the waves crashing on the beach at night on the third story of my amazing house. Now I’m not getting any boast on about my home for any reason except to reinforce further some of the benefits of making money online. It can be a highly profitable business. But I digress.

I was about to say something about what happened an hour ago. See, I’ve been pretty tired lately having just moved, but I know I have to do so much work each night online to keep myself on track to achieve my goals. That’s just part of it. If you hate discipline then whether you’re working on the internet or in an office will make no difference. You’ll hate your job. And it’s discipline I had to wrestle with an hour ago.

I’m in the process of setting up about 16 new niche Adsense sites and since the sites are all relatively new there’s a lot of repetitive processes to go through to get them up to speed. I have to install themes, plugins, configure Adsense and images and otherwise just muck around with code to get them looking just how I want. And that’s before I start to write, edit and upload the content. This is the part I hate most of the time. Writing content takes a lot of time and effort and sometimes, depending on the niche I’m targeting it can be pretty uninspiring topically.

I choose to write my own content because I want full control over the product and also because I’m good at writing and find that when I outsource the work I end up having to spend as long editing and rewriting the work as I would have spent simply churning it out myself. Also, I just never know when I’ve outsourced something when it’s going to be used by the creator again for someone else and end up spreading around the internet and becoming worthless as my own.

Writing good content is the chore part of my internet business and I have to be disciplined to hang in there when I really don’t feel like it and make it happen even when it’s boring because that’s what my business is about – content really is king on the internet – it’s what the internet is about.

So isn’t internet marketing (making money on the internet) supposed to be fun? Yes. It is. But it’s not all good times. I just hope anyone reading this who is in the ‘honeymoon’ phase of starting a home business online can brace themselves for when things change and it’s just another type of work that has to be done. If you can do that, look forward to buying your own beach house sooner than you think.
