1. Paying search engines to list your site
Paid search engine advertising is often referred to as Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising or Adwords (which is the brand name of Google’s advertising platform). When used correctly this method of promoting your site is very effective and lightning fast. However, for the uninitiated and underprepared it can be frustrating and expensive. It is also highly competitive.
I’ve used this method many times to promote my websites, particularly when they are new. It gets my message in front of exactly the people who I want to target and with careful preparation and disciplined spending I have found that it is not expensive.
2. Paying webmasters to link to you site
There are a lot of ways to go about doing this and I’m not an expert in these methods by any means. In fact I have hardly ever used these methods, though I know a lot of website owners who do so I know they can be effective.
The basic premise is this: a webmaster with a popular website makes some space available on various pages of their site where they sell advertising space. This can be in the form of a banner ad, text link, contextual link or even a paid review. You usually negotiate a price per month for the website to add your link to their page and you then sit back and wait for traffic from their site to click on the links and visit you.
You can also use Google Adwords Content option to have Google find sites willing to host your link and then pay-per-click, just as you do on Google’s search engine pages.
3. Paying ezine publishers to link to your site
Ezines are very popular in most niches and many ezine publishers regularly write to lists of over 100,000 subscribers. They also offer paid advertisements in their ezines in various forms, including text links, banner ads and even solo ads – ezine mail outs that are entirely dedicated to promoting your website.
These can be inexpensive and effective in promoting your website to a targeted audience if you find the right ezine and learn the ropes of writing a compelling ad.
