Website Traffic Basics

Look at this simple diagram.

All internet users start their online browsing at either a website or a search engine and they arrive at this site either via their home page or by clicking a link in an offline media (ie. an email or a document like this one).

Obviously, the sooner you can get someone to your own website or the website of an affiliate product the better your chances of getting them to pay attention to it (because it’s unlikely that you’re going to get many people to set your site as their home page).

You should especially aim to build a list of subscribers that you can regularly email. They can then click directly through to your site without getting distracted by anything in between.

Here’s another related diagram.

In its most essential form this diagram shows the full extent of a user’s possible options on the internet.

Therefore, to get someone to your website you have only four methods to choose from:

  1. Get a link to your website listed in a search engine
  2. Get a link to your website listed on another website
  3. Get a link to your website included in an email
  4. Get a link to your website included in a document.

It’s not rocket science. You put your link somewhere your market is going to come across it and you ask them to click it.

So how do you spread your links around in places where your customers are surfing the internet?

Essentially, there are only two ways:

  1. Pay a someone to put it in their search engine/site/document/email
  2. Convince someone to do it for no money

It’s been my experience that this is where the majority of would be successful internet marketers get stuck (or come unstuck, depending on the way you look at it).

Up until this point I hope I’ve been able to show you how simple the process of making money online can be. And it doesn’t have to be any more difficult from here either. It just involves the consideration of a significantly larger number of choices.

Ultimately, however, this is just another choice and if you have already chosen a niche and decided on a monetisation strategy then this is the last thing you may need to decide before going full-tilt towards earning a full-time profit online.

I’m going to suggest a number of options for ‘driving traffic’ to your website and I suggest that in the beginning you CHOOSE ONLY ONE method and learn to master it. There is no right or wrong choice here. It is just a matter of personal preference. Every method here can drive a significant amount of targeted traffic to your website – hungry buyers who want the solutions that you are offering and are willing to pay your price. If you spend the time learning everything you can about your chosen method and applying it you can succeed. Then, once you have mastered one method, move on to learning another and add that to your toolbox.

If I can just quickly come back to commitment and discipline (at the risk of sounding like a broken record) – this applies here like nowhere else. Choose just one bread-and-butter method to start with and discipline yourself to become good at it and you will soon have more traffic than you know what to do with. Then go on and add other streams and watch your profits explode.
